March 31 deadline for contesting property tax approaches

If the value of your home was recently reassessed and your taxes have gone up as a result, you still have about four weeks to file a complaint with your county auditor to challenge the new valuation. Most counties in Ohio have a March 31st deadline for filing a complaint challenging the 2010 valuation.

If you are in the Central Ohio area, we’ve provided you with the forms that you will need here. All Central Ohio counties have provided online forms except none could be located for Marion, Morrow and Pickaway counties. If you live in one of those counties, you may need to call the county auditor or stop by in person to obtain a complaint form.

If you live outside of Central Ohio then start by searching for your county auditor’s website and then searching for forms on that site. Forms often include instructions for completion as well as the deadline for filing for the 2010 year.

If you feel your property valuation is too high then challenge it with your county auditor and you may be able to get that valuation, and your taxes, lowered.
